Internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean, German based, female musician, Stella Chiweshe, conducted a mbira session at the Music Crossroads Academy in Budiriro, Harare, on 29 May 2013. Stella is also using the academy as her rehearsal base for her upcoming local shows, while aiming to inspire students and fostering exchange.
Stella Chiweshe has a career spanning 30 decades, being one of the first female Zimbabwean mbira players to become well-known. The fusion of Stella’s music and contemporary guitars has made her a Zimbabwe’s cultural Ambassador. Apart from her merit combining mbira with marimba in modern Zimbabwean music, she is touring Europe regularly since 1983 and has released seven internationally successful albums.
“We had a great time. It was exciting to interact with Stella Chiweshe and her band. We had the opportunity to apply some of the traditional dance routines we have been learning in class, and learnt a lot from the experience” said Tuso Mtukwa, a local MC Academy female student.
“Our Academy curriculum entails that now and then we bring in experts in the music industry to impart knowledge to our students, thus we are so happy that Stella Chiweshe took time from her busy schedule to be with our students” said Music Crossroads Zimbabwe director, Mathias Bangure.
