Happy Mother’s Day Music

Mbira, Mbira lessons, mbira Uk, mbira london
It’s mother’s day today in Zimbabwe so how about exploring some tracks tracks that show how Zimbabweans celebrate their mums? To start us off, here is a track from Chiwoniso Maraire’s debut album, Ancient Voices, that a lot of people in Zimbabwe will be familiar with. The second track is from Shingi Mangoma. For those who haven’t yet come across Shingi’s music, she is definitely one to watch out for from the Zimbabwean music circles. A mixture of mbira, ngoma and hosho, the track ‘Ndaramba’ is played on a Mhande beat. The third track is from the late Sam Mtukudzi. The son of a legend, Sam managed to create his own identity as a musician.  This is a beautiful track thanking his mum for her love. Gone too soon. The fourth track is ‘Hold on’ from the multi-award winning Audius Mtawarira. The fifth track by Innocent Utsewegota was very popular on Zimbabwean radios in the early 2000s. This track  shows how other music styles have been adopted and adapted in Zimbabwe, no doubt you will pick out the reggae dancehall influences! Happy Mother’s Day to all mums!
